CREATING A NAME DESIGNED FOR UBIQUITY.
WECA, a non-profit alliance, set out to establish the standard for wireless networking. Dubbed IEEE 802.11b, the standard was developed to allow computer users at home or at work to access the Internet and share and print information wirelessly.
The name Wi-Fi, was designed to mimic “Hi-Fi”, the term used throughout the ‘60s and ‘70s to describe another standard—high fidelity stereo sound. The simple and memorable construction was ideal for this pervasive standard.
